Important Flood Exclusions

Please review this overview of Flood Coverage. We want to bring these important exclusions to your attention so we can address any gaps in coverage.

Typically the property coverage you have in place on your place of business and your home excludes coverage for all claims caused by Flood. You are 4x more likely to suffer damage as the result of a Flood than you are a Fire. You can purchase Flood Insurance separately as a supplement to your property insurance. Floods are caused by storms, melting snow, hurricanes and water backup due to inadequate or overloaded drainage systems, dams or levee failure. To protect yourself you can purchase both building and contents coverage for the broadest protection.

The definition of a “Flood” in the policy form is as follows:

  • The overflow of inland or tidal waters.

  • The unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source such as heavy rainfall.

  • Mudslides or mudflows, caused by flooding that could be described as a river of mud.

  • The collapse or destabilization of land along the shore of a body of water, resulting from erosion or the effect of waves or water currents exceeding normal, cyclical levels.

Flood Insurance covers damage to building, including the foundation posts.  It covers direct physical losses caused by flood or flood related erosions.

There are some major exclusions under the Flood Coverage form, most notable of which is Wind Driven rain.
