GLANCE
Phillips Insurance roots date back
to the 1890's and the William J. Fuller Insurance Agency of Chicopee, Massachusetts.
William Fuller was the former Mayor of the City of Chicopee and his agency was one of the
first agencies to open in the City. The agency was purchased from the Fuller family on
January 1, 1953 by the late Cornelius W. Phillips, Jr.
Neil Phillips was a prominent civic leader in the State. He was
appointed by two Governors to the Chairmanship of the Massachusetts Alcohol Beverage
Control Commission. He was a member of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Mass
Transportation Commission and served on numerous State Boards in addition to being the
Chairman of the Board of Public Works for the city of Springfield for 28 years. A graduate
of Boston College, Neil was active in the Boston College Alumni Association as well as the
Catholic Dioceses.
The
second generation of Phillips ownership came in January of 1996 when Joe Phillips
purchased the agency. Joe is a cum laude graduate of the University of
Massachusetts School of Management and received his MBA from Boston College. In 1998, Joe
earned the prestigious Associate in Fidelity and Surety Bonding, AFSB, designation from
the Insurance Institute of America. For 11 years he worked in the insurance industry
in Boston, most recently as the Manager of the SAFECO Insurance office. Joe is the past
President of the Surety Association of Massachusetts and is active in a number of
construction related organizations. He lectured at the Boston Insurance Library from 1990
until 1993 and has given a number of presentations to industry groups on topics related to
the construction industry. Joe is currently an adjunct professor at Western New England
College where he teaches Risk Management in the Business School.
The agency has been located on Center Street in Chicopee since its inception in the
1890's. Currently, Phillips Insurance operates from the former parsonage building of the
Central Methodist Church which was built in the 1870's.
In 1999, Phillips
Insurance completed a successful merger with Furtek Insurance Agency of Chicopee,
Massachusetts. Furtek Insurance was established in 1917 and was one of the oldest family
owned insurance agencies in the country. The merger brought together two of the most
well-established and innovative agencies in Massachusetts.
